Classical {cabbage} cover: Another last minute design that just so happened to work out.

Native American Heritage Month: Wheres our obnoxious head line Maggart? No where to be found-same can be said for shit fonts on my poster. Making baby pink bad ass..just another day in the office.

World Record: Longest marriage. The one that I turned in for class was tallest hair style but I think that this one was a better idea and had a stronger use of color. Rusty shoved the use of line art down my throat, but he provided an excessive amount of tissue paper for the cause, so humored him. Turns out, ol' Rusty was right again-the line art improved the piece a lot.

Life and Death: Don't Hang yourself, surprise yourself. I tried to redo the "death" one but with little success, turns out I can only make illustrations the night before they due, when the Cardinals are playing in the World Series and I could really care less. Food for thought.

OK, This is my world record illustration for tallest hair style. The record I found was set by Marie Antoinette and her hair style was like 3 feet tall. However, I was pretty sure that Lady Gaga has probably either topped that or at least tied it, so, Gaga was the inspiration that I used for the face and head. I designed this to go across a two page spread, because I figured that this much weave couldn't possibly be contained on a 9 X12 page. Boom-pow, world record: donezo.

Done, naturally, the day before it was do. I like all of the separate components, the candelabra and the wash/splatter thing. I made the text by cutting the font out of a gold sheet that I spray painted to give it a kind of luxurious/ baroque-y look. I listened to a lot of this guys music and I actually like it. The one that I put on the album was Scarlatti Sonata C Minor K11-L352. Youtube it, bro.

I don't know what the hell I want to do with my life, but I know I want to be the boss. I am a reasonable person, therefore I should have the power to tell people no. In FAP, I believe I should have the power to tell dumb ass health kids- NO. But I don't. At my job, when people come in after hours and ask if they can look around while I am cleaning up (making more of a mess for me to clean up, I should be able to say- NO. But Im not the boss so I cant. This should all change. I am a bitch so people would be afraid of me and not be inconsiderate ass holes.

"Don't hang yourself, surprise yourself" is the design advice that Ashley and I found in a really super helpful book Matt made us by for his class. I started this illustration at 7:30 and came to get it printed at 9. Not bad timing Maggart. I am actually happy with how these turned out. I think that color/ washes are what I do best and I was wanting to do something more gestural and suggestive than the realistic crap I've been trying to do. Cut throat. Got-er-done.

Midterm Portfolio

Traditional Line Art:

These first two are line art drawing that I made large scale to turn in. The bottom one is a nice, loose, gestural illustration, while the one on top combined structured ruler lines as well as gestural lines.

Line art redo (above). I was freaking out about the quality of my line art drawings, so I wanted to make some fresh ones for mid term. I intended to make more than one, but decided that the two above really weren't so bad. I was thinking, "hmm, what shall I draw?" I was watching Sex and the City 2 while working on my #5 gouache, and seeing as I am obsessed, my subject matter didn't take long to figure out. This is SJP (Sarah Jessica Parker, duh!) with a bling bling #2 that is similar to the movie cover. I was really happy with how it turned out, especially in the dress.

Watercolor:

Well, I felt like I had a little bit of and "ah-ha moment" with both of these; lesson being that it really does make a difference if you let your watercolor dry. I worked on these at the same time and just worked on one while the other dried. One new thing I did with both of these was adding structure and line art in with just watercolor instead of pin and ink (again, learning that it is very important for the project to be dry before that is possible.) Another thing that helped these go a little more smoothly was the scale...should have enjoyed the 8" X 10" projects while we had em!

Watercolor + Line Art:

This is from the architecture watercolors "10 a days". I had really been struggling with the watercolor but doing simple line work to give structure before I laid in color really helped me out. I think that the colors and composition of this particular barn scene made it pretty successful.

Shhheeee's Baaaaaccck! Couldn't help sliding a fail proof self portrait in the mix. This was one of the first watercolors where we started to increase scale which really overwhelmed me at the time, but after scanning it in, it tightened up and came together pretty well. (I think it would be cool to re-work my beer bottles with this little gal one it!) Future project? Maybe!

No bout-a-doubt, Im from the Midwest, and since Rusty seems to revel in that kind of crap, had to throw my little rooster in. I did three versions of the rooster, they were actually part of the three in-class watercolors that we were supposed to be doing, but, go figure, I was having a rough morning and didn't do my three watercolors in class. I did, however, take it upon myself to make up for my lack of effort in class in my own time and that resulted some interesting watercolor experiments. The line work is really minimal in the one, but I know the sharpie could have gotten out of hand quickly, so I decided to go with "less is more" on the line art. Overall, I think the colors and strokes in this piece are pretty nice for a rookie!

Gouache:

AHH-HA! This was my moment for sure! This was the first time I had ever worked with gouache (despite Rusty's suggestion to practice first). I had a lot of fun with the bright colors and really "kicking' it in the ass" on my saturation, something I found a little lacking in my watercolors. I think that the picking method used with gouache is really my friend, and relative color is the enemy! Do a wash and then pick it sister, thats my new motto

Wack-em:

Oie Vay! I thought that I couldn't draw with pin and paper, this wacom tablet presented its own, worse difficulties. It as hard for me to refrain from using shades of grey on the line art, so I did several of my first ones incorrectly, but I found that keeping it "losey goosey" and not trying to make things so realistic was that best way to go with digital line art.

Here, on the paining, I was able to use the different shades, which help me create an overall image more like what I was going for. Buuut, most of all I think I shall avoid my tablet for the time being.

My Choice:

"Your Choice" pahaha who does Rust think he is kidding? Well, Rusty, if it was my choice for an illustration, I would pay a real illustrator to do something that looked wicked good and be sleeping like a baby at 7:30 every Monday, Wednesday, Friday. But seeing as that was an option, I decided to post something wicked good that I made instead hehe. I felt like this was a good candadit for the open project on the midterm because I wanted to use one of the "Facebook" pictures we made somewhere in my portfolio. Also, I really like the pencil line art in this one, but it is really subtle, so I was having a hard time deciding if it should go in the watercolor or the watercolor + line art category. Problem solved.

Well scale is the enemy here my friends. This looked absolutely nothing like my comp and ended up getting way over worked. I tried to tone down the colors on the print out to make it less intense... lets just say it was not my best judgement call. And as much as I hate to, I gotta give Rusty mad props for the nice eye balls, that was all him.

Creature of habit, I'm in love with my mixer. I knew that this is what I was going to make for my product illustration, but I decided to make a few more while I was waiting for this one to dry.

I think that I actually liked this illustration a little more, but Rusty, being the dream crusher that he is, wouldn't let me use it because of the colored background.

Ok, so I'm a little cheater cheater pumpkin eater, but when I heard Rusty say that combining watercolor and line art was almost idiot proof, I decided it was defiantly worth a shot. This one above is my favorite that I did this weekend. They were all modeled after the round barn (except for the crappy chicken coop)

This one has pretty heavy application but I do like the vivid colors. I don't like that there isn't a focal point, but when you're supposed to shit these things out overtime ya turn around, you cant expect perfection .

I broke my architectural drawings into two parts: the "work series" and the "home series".

The two drawing above were inspired by the tin ceilings at the shoppe I work at on the down town square. They are much more beautiful and intricate than my representation.

These are in the back room at the place I work at. The window by the steamer and the funky stairs up to where we put dresses in layaway. (BT Dubs, totes not a bad employee that draws while Im on the job all the time, but I had some down time after I finished my dress shoppe duties) [bt dubs dubs, if you are reading this and need an awesome dress, I can hooks you up with a 10% discount for Truman students!]

On a total of 32 time sheets, I tracked 140 hours. The allotted total time was 238 hours. I must admit, I turned in a lot of time sheets, but I never did get in the habit of it. For example, I think that the biggest thing throwing off my time is that I worked 6 hours a week in class, but I never counted that time into my time sheets. Also, the last few days before the final, the idea of time sheets went totally out the window, and trust me, there were a lot of hours used in these past few days. So, I am pretty sure that at the beginning of the semester, I was over budget on almost everything, but I think I got a little closer to hitting the goals by the end (however, contradictory to what my hours about say, Im pretty sure I was probably over budget overall this semester. Oops!)

The Secret of Feeling full spread is one that I printed out and I think it is one of my favorites. I am partial to the self shot photograph and all of the white and light colors. Its hard to think of what I would go back and change if I could just because it has already had so many changes. I just really enjoy this one. One negative thing I could find is that I cant really picture it being in a real magazine. Not really sure what it is about it but over all, I think the kid done good on this one.

How Safe? How safe huh? Not safe at all is the answer! I nearly lost my marbles over this one! This is ugh I think my 4th or 5th version of this spread. I must admit that it is the most successful version even though it was the least though out. I think that the over all spread has a nice balance and appealing facade, but I think that something more abrupt and alarming would have been more appropriate for this article. Also, I feel a little bad for my unoriginality on this one. Pretty much just jocked this from what I saw was getting approved in the class. Although I don't have a ton invested in this one, I must put aside my pride (like I must do every other day in Vis Vom) and do something that "just worked". I am happy with my choice to print this one off as well, because the colors turned out beautifully (A really feat for the printers in the lab) Thank you Ashley Buhmann!

Herp. Yuck. Still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Anyway, I think that the color and photograph in the spread are really successful. I will be the first to admit, I didnt really blow anything off the concept map with this one but alas, it has the little red "ok" in the corner, and Ill take 'er! I Think one of my favorite things about this poster (other than the" ballin" eye ball ) is the way that the tan and yellow box in the bottom right corner mildly mimics the National Geographic Logo (I think it helps the poster look a little more legit). I had thought about adding some melting ice to the upper right corner but after experimenting with it, I saw no point in defacing the beautiful photo. (Bee tee dubs, the word HERP is NOT allowed in the vis vom lab from this point on!)

I made my entire beer carrier yesterday. I wish that I would have spread the time out so that Rusty could have looked over it to make changes, but over all it is really close to what I wanted. I has such a hard time with the illustration and naturally, the colors printed out like crap (gotta love that Truman Art Department) but over all, I really like it. I hid a few snarky things that I am curious to see if Rusty will find while grading it. Over all, I think I put it together pretty ok, there are a few nasty exacto cuts and it DOES technically hold the 6 filled bottles but it doesn't like it very much (***So Rusty, when grading PLEASE don't pick up by the handle***)

These Wick Fowler series posters have been kicking my butt. I have thought of about 10 ideas that would work in a series, but I haven't been able to execute any of them for various reasons. So there I was, the second to last week of the semester with no clue what to do for these stinking posters. I was brainstorming with my sister about what I could do for imagery. We were trying to think of how to show a cow being spicy and out of no where, from across the room, my mom yells out, "How 'bout Pepper Tits". Of course my sister and I just busted out laughing, but it was actually what god this whole idea started By "pepper tits", my mom meant making the cows udders look like peppers. Its weird but we were able to think of a few more things that we could do to make it work in a series. I tried to spoof on the whole "no acquired images" rule but Rusty busted me. So, this is just a post of some pictures that I took this weekend for the posters.

DAHH! S of I. I am no illustrator and this project was throwing me for a big loop. There is a lot of pressure to choose good imagery for a poster that is so large (24 X 36). I started doing a photoshop illustration of a women's legs and booty, but was very relieved when Rusty said that I could use one of my prints from print making. So that is the imagery on the front ( done from a 18 X 24 etching plate). The text on the back has also been through a dramatic transformation. A few times when I showed the text to Rusty he circled something and just said "I hate this". NIiiIIicccCee going Maggart. But, after about pulling my hair out, it got the "ok". The front (the image) has the go ahead and the back (the text) has an "ok with alts". I need to bump up the "Call for Entries" section to center it in its folded section and I need to add that it is the 54th Exhibition somewhere bigger.

POP

I finally got the "ok" on my Rapala POP. The actual size of this is 14" wide by 36" high. It gets folded in half vertically (so the real deal won't really look like the fishies are kissing). I got the idea for this by looking at POPs at Wal*Mart. Once it is folded in half, the two open ends go in to little clear plastic clips (two or three of them) The clear plastic clips ad hear to the wall or shelf and then the 3' POP can act as a divider. I think that this is a nice photo and I think that it could actually be a functional design in a place like Bass Pro. There were a lot of different versions of this, but overall, once I knew what kind of POP I was going to do, it came together pretty quickly. (The copy at the top says, " With more world records than any other lure, Rapala is your sure bet for the best catch.)

After only few days of minor tinkering, and lost of major COB for the lures, we've got a spread that Rusty said "isn't too bad". The ultimate compliment around the Truman art department. This bad boy got the ok today and is ready to be shown to the world. *I would like to note that I came up with the copy under the lures and did any adjustments to the main copy that I could, but that nonsensical crap was not written by me. I really like the photo of my dad at the top and I think that Rusty's suggestion of adding the Rapala logo in the sky works really nicely. See ya later Rapala week, it's been fun

Gone Fishin'

Well, today was an exceptional day. Rather than vis com being the reason I has to sit in a cold, stale room all day, I got to use it as an excuse to brake in my new (pink) fishing pole! My dad is a fishing enthusiast and has passed his love for fishing on to me. Ok, so you heard me say, "My dad is a fishing enthusiast," right? As soon as I told him that I was doing an article design for Repala, every Bass Pro and Cabala's magazine he has obtained over the past 20 years was spread out on the kitchen table. This was soon followed by him busting out a tackle box that I didn't even know he had. You see, there is the every day crappie tackle box that I have become quite familiar with, but this, this tackle box was three times the size and about three times as old. So, once it came out, he literally took out every single lure and told me a story about each one (several weren't even Rapalas haha). So that was a very cute, but lengthy process, but after I took individual photos of some of them, it was time to hit the lake (for a photo shoot only, we were very aware that we wouldn't be catching anything.) Dad was a really good sport when I was taking his picture and the weather turned out to be so so so beautiful! Today I took well over 1,000 photos and hath since combed over them and narrowed it down to about 350. As I start to put the fishing layout together, I realize that I wont even be able to use most of them because it is a pretty text heavy lay out, so I just wanted to post a few of my favorites and a sneak peak into what might turn up in the spread! I took around 200 photos but I'll only post a few. Also included, yummy yummy chex mix that was also for this spread. I am not including the spread because I am hoping to blog it in joyful post once its been approved .

Wick Fowler's 2 Alarm Chili

Well this is just the tip of the ice burg of all the stuff to do for this project but it has been approved and that is a pretty good start if you ask me. I am pretty happy with this. The objective was to make it stand out on selves and to make it seem spicy but not so much so that it would scare off skeptical buyers. I think that the label has clean colors and illustration style that will do both of those things. I like how simple the label looks even though it was anything but simple to make. I had to remake the pattern a hundred times because Rusty said my beans had nodes. Also, after printing a draft, I realized that my measurements were off and I had to resize the whole can! Also, remaking their ugly logo and the nutrition facts really tested my patients and retina strength. Now I still need to make 3 ads and 3 huge posters. Fingers Crossed!

Well, in true Shelby fashion, I restarted this about a jilion times! Alas, the 32 page booklet has been approved. 32 pages Shelby? Really? Why, ya coulda done 20? Well, although it was expensive and a pain in the butt, I am glad that I chose to spread this out over more pages and rework all of the images. My document started off as being really image heavy (I am now addicted to National Geographic Travel Photos). But after working with it and reading the text, I realized, "Hey, this is really more about getting organized and helping students get prepared to study abroad. So, I tried to put myself in their shoes and ask myself, "what would I find helpful if it were me?" I decided that beautiful images of places that Truman may not even offer in Study Abroad probably want the best solution. So, I decided to just make the text organized and easy to follow with out being stale. Im quite pleased with how it turned out. (Even though printing a color proof cost me and arm and a leg and much anxiety)

After being drug out over half of the semester, Rusty finally put one of he infamous "ok's" in the corner. I think it is safe to day that today was by far the most entertaining day of our little vis com lives. Rusty acted as a one man circus (will minor assistance from the only other male in the class). Acting like "a bull in a china shop", Rusty managed to fling every shred of plastic and ever wing nut in the building across the room of the lab. This made me nervous. Then, I thought, heck, if ya can't beat 'em, join 'em. So, I pulled out my camera and started to document a little of the madness. Aside from the less than graceful assembly of the very expensive camera equipment, it was fun to listen to Rusty pretend like he knew what he was talking about. This included the phrase "so, in theory, this should work"

This Red Barn poster is not the most thrilling thing in the world, but I think it does a pretty good job at serving its purpose. I went in and added more money to the pocket (Rusty's request) and I am glad that I went with the had written tag, rather than the typed one. Ahhh, our vis com II world before color was a sad, sad, little world. Bring on the pantone swatches baby!

Native American Heritage Month Poster Series. For starters, I know these aren't flawless, but, Rust said he, "would buy that for a dollar" (what ever the hell that means, right?) hehe anyway, I took upon myself that that meant, "Yes, Shelby, all three of those are approved" I got a late start on these but I feel like it was worth it to develop the concept. This poster got pretty personal by the end. By personal, I mean I took over 100 photos of my awkward self lookin' like a fool, as well as hand writing the text and hand crinkling the paper in the text and background. I feel good about the effort I put into this one, worth every second (every second over budget as well) hehe.

Native American Heritage Month

I Shot new photos for all of these and finally figured out what I wanted to do with the photoshop effects so I'm starting to see a gimps of what I imagined this to be. Im going to have to tinker with the second color, it might be a little light and the text on the left is just that - texts that has been pushed over to the left and kind of forgotten about so I will work with that a little more

There is so much white in the background of this one that you can tell that its a 13 X 19 poster online. This is my attempt to salvage my Jazz Combo Poster idea. Very Very Rough but Im hoping I can work with it some and develop it quickly (yeah, like that ever happens)

None Too Safe

I have been working and working with the How Safe spread and it isn't getting anywhere... until now that is. This is a very very rough comp and the text is awkward but I think its a fun spin on the food article (Death to super market photos!) The images are relief prints that were provided by my sister (www.toniadee.com). She made them when she was in college and I had her send me them in pdfs and I hath since done some tinkering. We shall see what the red pin thinks.

Native American Posters {Rough start, but a start}

These are the first draft of my Native American Heritage Month posters. I got a really late start on them but I really hope its worth it. My late start actually have method behind it. I had no concept until this Friday. Rather than use a lot of my time developing posters with no concept, I focused my attention on digging up something that would go farther than just stating the event. One night, when I had to admit to myself that I wasn't getting anywhere, I asked Matt for help, and thank God I did. We went through and advertising book that he had and talk about why the posters in it were so successful. They were selling a product with out stating what it was at all. Several of the things we looked at were also in a series of three with is really helpful for this project in particular. Another reason the ads were so successful was because of the photography and imagery. Sadly, I don't think my imagery is quite up to par and I really need to work on manipulating it to make it look better with the two color limitation. Also, these haven't gone through a crit yet, so I am hoping that the concept translates well to someone other than me.

Design Pet Peeves

To be boring and start with the obvious, I too have become frustrated with lazy typesetting. Widows, line breaks etc. I can no longer look through a Better Homes and Garden Magazine without circling errors with the closest, handy writing utensil. Thank you vis comm, you have literally ruined even the most simple joys in life.

Another is about the programs we use. Why can't Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign have the same short cuts? Is this a test? Oh, hey, whats up Photoshop? One Apple Z is all your going to cough up? Really? Nonsence. Illustrator, command D, look into it, InDesign's got it, you do not. InDesign, you need to work on keepin' track of my links. Embed them with a tracking device, give them a prefix of "Don't Move this File Somewhere Else, Dumbass", ya gotta do something, you're not really keeping up with my needs or the needs of my layouts.

I do not like posters (or any other lay out) that asks me a rhetorical question. It is lazy and nagging. "What's In Your Future?" Well, nosey poster, I cant be quite sure, but, right now Im going to finish my coffee and walk away from you.

Stock Images. Vector brushes. The whole like of them. I am quite unimpressed with your ability to copy and paste. Use them if you must, brag about using them if you don't know better.

I like white. The white of paper, something clean. Clutter and information close to margins stresses me out a tad.

Approving Of Herp

I had to re size this whole (amazing) picture and then, in turn, recreate the National Geographic logo. I think it was worth it though, because it hath since been approved. Also, the type was been much improved, after a long session of what Rusty calls "text massaging" (I call it bitch slapping the text). Anyway, although it looks quite effortless, I did have a hard time with the vertical text arrangement, but its soooo worth it to get the measly, little red "OK" in the corner of the print out. And exhale.

Daily Diet {Food N' Pills}

Nom Nom Nom! Just the daily diet of a "Vis Vommer" ..... Thats a joke, we dont really have time to eat, but pills on the other hand, MmmMMmm. Ok, seriously, these are pretty self explanatory, these are just 3 of the 48 photos I took to use on the Secrets of Feeling Full spread. But, to add to the post, I will complain below and explain why we should be given pills when declaring vis vom as a major.

My hands are purple because this lab is unreasonably freezing. My pandora stations are all wack right now. My eyeballs hurt. But, worst of all, I can hear the screams and laughter of the Theatre majors. You know, the people that are ALWAYS on the couches on the OP lobby. Those people need to get a real major and stop being so happy, it's pissing me off. Love, the angsty Art Major

Playing Catch Up {Desperate Attempts Of The Angsty One}

Hokay, so I know the layout about is really gross, but to point out the positive, it is MUCH better than my first one (it was too bad to even make it to the blog, and thats saying a lot, seeing as I have no shame). Another high note, I managed to use yet another kitchen aid product in a design {Kitchen Aid = love FOREVER}. Pretty ok colors as well (minus the gross brown/black chunk in the bottom corner). I did make the peel shaving my the peeler and photoshopped the peel off the potato. They are by no means very well crafted, but I was a little excited about it. That was, until I stepped back and saw how bad this was..Then I moved on to better things (Below)

Im sure Rusty's infamous RED PEN will still do a doozy on this one (even though the colors will totes clash--uugggh) But I think I'm on the right track with this one. Fingers Crossed!

The First Version of this bad boy didn't have an image on it. (Nice image in this one though eh? Why thank you very much, I thought it was nice as well.) I also changed the type a TON, but you will never know because Im not putting the first yucky thing on here. Again fingers crossed for diss one!

Hehe that's a line from "How to Train Your Dragon" (my favorite line to be exact, but who watches Disney movies, come on, we're all mature designers in the making here) Anyway... moving on... This is the Herp poster. That word is still making me cringe. I said I wasn't going to put it on my poster but it ended up being hard to avoid so I just made it a 12pt font. Yuck. Well this isnt really what I wanted to do for this, I actually had a concept that I was just too incompetent to accomplish so I took the same, stupid, cheese, cliche route that 90% of the class did and put an effing lizard on it. Take a moment, let the disappointment soak in.... Ok now, again, trying to throw something positive in there. I kinda know what's up when it comes to choosing colors.

Approved: Above is my news letter (about the millionth draft) Today, it was finally approved. Getting something approved by Rusty consist of him using his God forsaken red pen and writing "ok". This really doesn't feel as exciting as one would hope

Approved: Red Barn Poster. According to Rusty, the $ signs could be tampered with some more. I saw we treat it like cat shit and sweep it under a rug. Lets go Vis Vom.

This is my Jazz poster in progress. (This is from the 'Just for the yumm of it' pictures). The cooking was by far better than this layout. Going to keep playing with it to make it better but this too, because of Rusy's wishes, is getting the "Cat Shit" treatment.

In The Works: Red Barn & Jazz Combo

This is my second version of the Red Barn Poster. The first one was a mushy mess of different scribbles and textures that I made the night before we hand to turn something in. Although this is less than perfect, this poster is a great improvement. I really wanted to show the imagery of a person to show that it was geared towards students without showing a specific student. I had some trouble getting a grid that would work with the composition of the photo that I took, but after some serious threats to my InDesign file, I got things worked out. (Side note: Red Barn, Jazz Combo, and Newsletter project files have all been put in a new folder on my flash drive labeled, "BAAAAHH". For God's sake, Rusty, approve something!

Well, ok, this is probably not going to get approved right now. I needed a concept for the Jazz combo concert and this is the result of being a food deprived Vis Vomm student. Rusty said something about hot sauce (which I instantly rolled my eyes at and disregarded) while brain storming. Stumped and still looking for inspiration, I called a friend and asked him what he thought of when he thought of jazz. His response was "Ya know, that spicy rice stuff with all the goodies in it." It is easy to see that this kid and I are friends mostly because we are both fatties. So, Gumbo it is. The concept might still be a little sketch and the illustrations are ehhh, ya know but we shall see.... (Side note: This is the second version of all of the illustrations, because, after I made them the first time, to reduce the clutter on my screen, I started closing excess windows. I was on a roll of clicking "Don't Save" on all of my nonsensical brainstorming documents, and poof, illustrations gonezo. They should give vis com students medication for instances such as these!

I had to call this one my Re(Re)Design because after seeing my origional ReDesign blown up on Rusty's huge projector, I couldn't help wondering, "What the hell was I thinking?!" I finished the redesign under the time budget, leaving me the litte extra buffer time to spruce a few things up before turning it in (I know, how sly of me hehe)

Ok, this file does not look quite as good as it did in Photoshop. I was working on this second animation at the same time as the news letter and showed, as both projects came out looking a little half minded. This version that you're seeing is my 4th version of my second animation. I spent 2.5 hours on the first three versions (and trying to figure out the time line animation, which, by the way is so much easier than the individual frames) Once I started to get the hang of it, I made this bad boy in about 20 minutes before leaving the lab after a long day.

Oh, the news letter. We had an eight hour time limit for this one and I did it in about four. It was not much fun, but I do, however, look forward to redesigning it, for my pride's sake.

Deserted Island Type List

To pick my 5 “deserted island typeface” list, I decided that I needed to do a relatively quick scan for fonts and then narrow down my options. I started with a large body of text and displayed it on my screen in 15 different fonts. I quickly cut the ones that I saw immediate problems with. Once I got it down to 7, I made them larger to see which ones would work well as headlines as well. (Down to 6- phew, this is a lot of work!) I needed to get rid of one fore so I then looked very closely at the two it was between and made the final cut. My ballin' list of the best typefaces out there is as follows:

Marker Felt

Zapfino

Stencil std

Rosewood Std

Giddyup Std

Just in case Rusty wasn’t down with my ex centric and creative choices, I picked a more boring, practical list as well:

Arno Pro: This one was a winner largely because of it’s ability to

handle the large body of copy (this one should come in handy for

the new letter project) It also has a lot of different variations that

Rusty may or may not allow me to use.

Berkeley: This is another serif font, but it is a little lighter and more spacious that Arno Pro.

Jason Text: This typeface seemed, to me, to be a good mix of the two previous. It is strong and has a similar weight as the Arno, but is a little less compact like the Berkeley.

ITC Stone Sans: I tend do think that San serif fonts look a little less professional than serif fonts, however, they do undoubtedly have a more modern feel. I was able to find two that I like quite well to have in my bag of “deserted island” tricks.

Geneva: Last but not least, the other San-serif font that I chose.Very simple and just a little heavier in appearance that the Stone Sans as well as having a larger vertical scale than the other San serif.

Goudy Old Style Animation

This was my first ever stab at an animation. Infact, when Rusty assigned it, not only did I not know how to do it, I didnt know what it was or that Photoshop could even do such a thing. But, like Goudy, Ol' Maggart's still got it and I finished under the two hour time budget (not half bad if ya ask me)
